[OSENWORLD] Roh Jae-won, who played the memorable character Nam-gyu in Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3, shared his deep appreciation for co-star Choi Seung-hyun—better known as T.O.P—crediting him for his support and guidance throughout filming. “For Nam-gyu, Tanos was the leader,” Roh said, referring to T.O.P’s character in the Netflix mega-hit.
In a press interview on July 9, Roh spoke about the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of the series and his character’s evolution. Nam-gyu begins Season 2 as a follower of Tanos, a former rapper played by Choi, and shows a gritty survival instinct throughout the game. Following Tanos’s death in Season 3, Nam-gyu continued to play a key role, forming tense alliances with Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan) and Min-su (Lee David).
Roh’s performance earned praise from both Korean and international audiences. While much of the early buzz focused on T.O.P’s return to the screen—given his fame as a former member of K-pop group BIGBANG—Roh carved out a distinct identity, especially as his character gained narrative weight and even began mimicking Tanos’s voice after his death.
When asked about their off-screen relationship, Roh shared a lighthearted memory: “Choi Seung-hyun didn’t mind that I mimicked him. He joked, ‘Why does Nam-gyu hate me so much? What did I ever do to him?’ He said he actually thought Nam-gyu was just a pure-hearted guy.”
He went on, “From Nam-gyu’s point of view, Tanos was this guy who couldn’t even remember his name, only liked Min-su, and ignored everything he said. Of course he resented him!”
Roh described Choi as a true leader on set. “He was under a lot of pressure at first—acting in front of 456 extras isn’t easy—but once the camera started rolling, he gave it everything. Watching him act like his life depended on it was inspiring.”
“Off camera, things were light and fun,” he continued. “But inside, I kept myself in character. I’d look at him and think, ‘I’m Nam-gyu, and that’s Tanos.’” He also shared that he leaned on co-stars Lee David and Won Ji-an during difficult moments. “We were close in age, and we talked a lot when things got tough.”
Roh credited T.O.P with helping him fully embody Nam-gyu. “He really looked out for me. There wouldn’t have been a Tanos without Choi Seung-hyun, and I wouldn’t have been Nam-gyu. He saw me as that character. Every time we met, he’d shout, ‘Namsu! Namsu!’ I was so grateful for that.”
He added with a laugh, “I think that’s why Director Hwang Dong-hyuk started calling me ‘Namsu’ on set and even added it to the script.”
Addressing public criticism of T.O.P’s casting, Roh responded carefully: “He really loved that role. It’s not my place to speak for everyone, and audiences are entitled to their opinions—but a lot of people appreciated what he brought to it.”
A longtime BIGBANG fan himself, Roh said his admiration didn’t interfere with his work. “I tried not to see him as a K-pop star while filming. But that dynamic actually helped the character. Nam-gyu was in awe—‘Oh, he’s that famous rapper!’—so I leaned into that feeling.”
Squid Game, which debuted in 2021, became a global sensation with its brutal depiction of a high-stakes survival game involving 456 participants vying for a ₩45.6 billion (approx. $35 million USD) prize. The show has since become one of Netflix’s flagship series, returning for Seasons 2 and 3.
Season 2, released last year, racked up over 600 million views. Season 3 continues the saga, following Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) as he re-enters the game with a personal mission, along with the secretive Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and a roster of returning and new contestants facing their final fates in the deadly competition.
‘오징어 게임’ 시즌2와 시즌3에서 ‘남규’ 역으로 주목받은 배우 노재원이 '타노스(최승현)'에게 고마움을 표시했다. 적어도 '남규'에게 '타노스'는 리더였다.
노재원은 9일 오후 진행된 인터뷰에서 기자들과 만나 드라마 비하인드를 전했다. 그는 극 중 과거 인기 래퍼였던 타노스(최승현)를 추종하며 끈질긴 생존력을 보여주다가, 타노스 사후에도 명기(임시완), 민수(이다윗) 등과 함께 긴장감을 불어넣는 인물 ‘남규’로 열연했다.
노재원은 시즌2, 시즌3에 등장하는 참가자 남규 역으로 열연을 펼쳤다. 타노스(최승현) 추종자 중 한 사람으로 활약한 남규의 특성상 극 중 노재원은 시즌2에서는 타노스와 민수(이다윗)를 비롯해 일명 '타노스 팸'과 어울렸다. 타노스가 죽은 시즌3에서는 명기(임시완)와 함께 이합집산하며 전략적 플레이를 보여줬다.
이 과정에서 노재원의 열연은 국내외를 막론하고 호평을 자아냈다. 최승현이 과거 빅뱅 멤버였던 만큼 출연 여부부터 뜨거운 관심을 모았던 가운데 그 옆에 있던 노재원을 향한 관심도 높아졌던 상황. 남규는 타노스가 죽은 뒤 타노스 성대모사를 하는 모습까지 비중 있는 빌런으로 거듭났다. 그렇다면 실제 둘 사이의 관계는 어땠을까.
노재원은 "최승현은 자기 따라한 것보다 '왜 이렇게 내 욕을 많이 하냐. 남규한테 잘못한 게 뭐가 있냐'고 하더라. 순수하게 남규를 생각한 거였다고 하더라"라고 밝혀 웃음을 자아냈다. 노재원은 "자기 이름도 못 외우고 민수(이다윗)만 좋아하고 제 말을 묵살시키는 타노스가 남규는 미웠던 것 같다"라고 설명했다.
'팀 타노스'의 분위기는 어땠을까. 노재원은 "진짜 리더십 있게 최승현이 챙겨줬다. 초반 촬영 때 압박감과 456명 앞에서 본인이 연기를 한다는 것에 부담감이 있던 것 같다. 그런데 촬영하면서는 정말 목숨 걸고 연기하는 사람처럼 최선을 다하는 모습이라 자극도 많이 됐다. 평소엔 화기애애했지만 저는 속으로 '내가 남규야' 이런 생각을 하면서 타노스를 바라보기도 했다. 그리고 다윗이랑 원지안, 이렇게 서로 의지했다. 서로 나이가 비슷했다. 힘들 때나 고민이 있을 때 이 친구들이랑 이야기를 많이 나눴다"라고 털어놨다.
더불어 노재원은 "저를 얼마나 많이 아껴줬는지 너무 고마운 게 많다. 제가 남규를 할 수 있게 만들어준 게 타노스 캐릭터이고 최승현이었다. 저를 남규로 바라봐줬다. 맨날 만날 때마다 '남수, 남수!'라고 했다. 그런 점이 저는 정말 고마웠다. 제가 연기를 할 수 있게끔 많은 도움을 줬다"라며 최승현에게 깊은 고마움을 표했다.
노재원은 "그래서 황동혁 감독님도 '남규, 남수'라고 대사를 적어주신 것 같다. 현장에서 '민규 남수'라고 해주시기도 했다"라며 웃었고, 탑을 향한 대중의 질타에 대해 "최승현은 정말 그 역할을 많이 사랑했다"라며 안타까움을 표했다. 다만 "제가 뭐라고 할 건 아니다. 보는 사람들의 자유고, 또 좋게 본 사람도 많다"라며 말을 아꼈다.
실제 '빅뱅' 팬이기도 했다는 노재원은 "그건 중요하지 않았다. 연기할 때는 오히려 도움이 됐다. 남규가 처음에 '오, 타노스 유명한 래퍼'라면서 따랐으니 그 연결 지점으로 도움은 됐다. 최대한 빅뱅으로 바라보지 않으려고 노력했다. 노골적으로 팬심을 고백하진 못했다"라고 털어놨다.
한편 지난 2021년 첫 공개된 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 ‘오징어 게임’은 총 456억 원의 상금을 걸고 의문의 서바이벌 게임에 참가한 이들이 최후의 승자가 되기 위해 목숨을 걸고 극한의 게임에 도전하는 이야기다. 시즌1부터 글로벌 신드롬을 일으킨 ‘오징어 게임’은 시즌3까지 공개되며 넷플릭스를 대표하는 인기 시리즈로 자리매김했다.
지난해 공개된 시즌2까지 총 시청수 6억 뷰를 기록했다. 이번 시즌3에서는 시즌1 우승 이후 자신만의 목적을 품고 다시 참가한 게임에서 가장 친한 친구를 잃고 만 기훈(이정재)과 정체를 숨긴 채 게임에 숨어들었던 프론트맨(이병헌), 그리고 그 잔인한 게임 속에서 살아남은 참가자들의 마지막 운명을 다뤘다.
